High Tech Turtles Improve Meter Reading Yes Virginia, there IS such a thing as a "high tech turtle." Since early 1998, JNEC employees have been installing "turtle" automated meters. The turtle is actually a small transmitter that sends meter readings over the power lines to receivers at JNECs substations. The transmitter earns the "turtle" name from the fact that it transmits the readings slowly - taking more than 24 hours for a reading to get from a transmitter to a receiver. Readings are then relayed by phone and collected at the co-op office. A process that used to take five people an entire month to do will be accomplished in a few hours, by one person, when the system is complete. We now have over 16,000 turtle meters installed. We have completed three of our five meter reading routes and are using these automated readings. We should soon have a fourth route converted to turtle meters. In addition to providing meter readings, the "turtle" system will also provide a wealth of data to JNECs engineering staff to help guide system improvements. |
